Temperature Monitors Report Widescale Global Cooling
The "old climatology" which I was trained in and formerly taught in the universities, embraced the observed principles of homeostatic mechanisms -- or, self-correcting mechanisms -- by which both living system and larger ecological systems would adjust to compensate for changes. Such was the foundation for Lovelock's "Gaia" theory of "Earth as living organism". The generation which embraced Gaia has forgotten or never knew the science behind it, however, and instead has flocked to the CO2 theory of global warming. But that theory basically ignores homeostatic mechanisms, and hundreds of years of empirically-developed climate science.
When you get hot, your body sweats and discharges heat by the mechanism of water evaporation from the skin surface. Likewise, a global warming could trigger a global cooling by increases in evaporation from land and oceans, with subsequent increases in clouds and precipitation. A global cooling always has been more dangerous given the predominance of increased glaciers, massive storms, shipwrecks, shorter growing seasons, failed crops, starvation and famine during such times. Too much rains and ice can work a damage just as too little rains and heat. Anyone who has read a bit about the Little Ice Age knows this, and doesn't necessarily fear a moderate global warming, which also happened in the past during the Medieval Warm Period, which was mostly a time of plenty and booming economies. But the "new climatology" speaks of "tipping points", which is like saying, when your body gets hot, you don't sweat anymore. Or when the atmosphere heats, clouds no longer form. That could happen with a disturbed organism, or with a stagnated dor-choked atmosphere -- but that's not what is claimed by the advocates of Industrial CO2 greenhouse theory. Irrespective of the theory one embraces, it is axiomatic that atmospheric warming evaporates more water, and from that, more clouds and precipitation as rain and snow. Snow on the ground then reflects sunlight back into space, and in a net sense the atmosphere cools. Ergo, last year, and this winter -- breaking all records for snows and cooling world-wide, and confounding the predictions of the warming advocates. Natural cycle? Driven by solar variation (we are still waiting for the next solar cycle to start -- the sun seems to have the sunspot-switch turned off!) Driven by cloudbuster operations within and surrounding the Saharasian Desert Belt, which suppresses the desert-drought heat-wave-producing dust-dor clouds? Who can say. In any case, here at OBRL Greensprings Center, we had a full 5 feet of snow on the ground by mid February. Few here are old enough to remember anything similar. Some photos from the 1930s suggest a similar snow condition, but not since. It was literally up to the shoulders or the eyeballs, depending upon your height. Nobody would believe it, so we made a short photo-essay, here:
This record snow was not merely local but was typical of many other places in the Northern Hemisphere. The article below suggests, a dramatic global cooling is in progress. Expect a rekindling of all the public debate. Possibly it is a short cold transient from a larger trend of continued warming. Or the trend could be reversing. I suppose we will all hear the claimed rise in human-produced global CO2 is responsible for this as well, just as it was firstly blamed for Hurricane Katrina, and later blamed for the absence of the failed prediction for even more hurricanes. If anything like the Little Ice Age developed, the UN would insist everyone return to coal burning, cross-ocean trade and travel would become a risky enterprise once again, and we would be burning all those textbooks to keep warm in the dark.

Twelve-month long drop in world temperatures wipes out a century of warming
Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on.
No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.
A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out most of the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.
Scientists quoted in a past DailyTech article link the cooling to reduced solar activity which they claim is a much larger driver of climate change than man-made greenhouse gases. The dramatic cooling seen in just 12 months time seems to bear that out. While the data doesn't itself disprove that carbon dioxide is acting to warm the planet, it does demonstrate clearly that more powerful factors are now cooling it.
Let's hope those factors stop fast. Cold is more damaging than heat. The mean temperature of the planet is about 54 degrees. Humans -- and most of the crops and animals we depend on -- prefer a temperature closer to 70.
Historically, the warm periods such as the Medieval Climate Optimum were beneficial for civilization. Corresponding cooling events such as the Little Ice Age, though, were uniformly bad news.

Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age

Snow cover over North America and much of Siberia, Mongolia and China is greater than at any time since 1966.
The U.S. National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) reported that many American cities and towns suffered record cold temperatures in January and early February. According to the NCDC, the average temperature in January "was -0.3 F cooler than the 1901-2000 (20th century) average."
China is surviving its most brutal winter in a century. Temperatures in the normally balmy south were so low for so long that some middle-sized cities went days and even weeks without electricity because once power lines had toppled it was too cold or too icy to repair them.
There have been so many snow and ice storms in Ontario and Quebec in the past two months that the real estate market has felt the pinch as home buyers have stayed home rather than venturing out looking for new houses.
In just the first two weeks of February, Toronto received 70 cm of snow, smashing the record of 66.6 cm for the entire month set back in the pre-SUV, pre-Kyoto, pre-carbon footprint days of 1950.
And remember the Arctic Sea ice? The ice we were told so hysterically last fall had melted to its "lowest levels on record? Never mind that those records only date back as far as 1972 and that there is anthropological and geological evidence of much greater melts in the past.
The ice is back.
Gilles Langis, a senior forecaster with the Canadian Ice Service in Ottawa, says the Arctic winter has been so severe the ice has not only recovered, it is actually 10 to 20 cm thicker in many places than at this time last year.
OK, so one winter does not a climate make. It would be premature to claim an Ice Age is looming just because we have had one of our most brutal winters in decades.
But if environmentalists and environment reporters can run around shrieking about the manmade destruction of the natural order every time a robin shows up on Georgian Bay two weeks early, then it is at least fair game to use this winter's weather stories to wonder whether the alarmist are being a tad premature.
And it's not just anecdotal evidence that is piling up against the climate-change dogma.
According to Robert Toggweiler of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University and Joellen Russell, assistant professor of biogeochemical dynamics at the University of Arizona -- two prominent climate modellers -- the computer models that show polar ice-melt cooling the oceans, stopping the circulation of warm equatorial water to northern latitudes and triggering another Ice Age (a la the movie The Day After Tomorrow) are all wrong.
"We missed what was right in front of our eyes," says Prof. Russell. It's not ice melt but rather wind circulation that drives ocean currents northward from the tropics. Climate models until now have not properly accounted for the wind's effects on ocean circulation, so researchers have compensated by over-emphasizing the role of manmade warming on polar ice melt.
But when Profs. Toggweiler and Russell rejigged their model to include the 40-year cycle of winds away from the equator (then back towards it again), the role of ocean currents bringing warm southern waters to the north was obvious in the current Arctic warming.
Last month, Oleg Sorokhtin, a fellow of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, shrugged off manmade climate change as "a drop in the bucket." Showing that solar activity has entered an inactive phase, Prof. Sorokhtin advised people to "stock up on fur coats."
He is not alone. Kenneth Tapping of our own National Research Council, who oversees a giant radio telescope focused on the sun, is convinced we are in for a long period of severely cold weather if sunspot activity does not pick up soon.
The last time the sun was this inactive, Earth suffered the Little Ice Age that lasted about five centuries and ended in 1850. Crops failed through killer frosts and drought. Famine, plague and war were widespread. Harbours froze, so did rivers, and trade ceased.
It's way too early to claim the same is about to happen again, but then it's way too early for the hysteria of the global warmers, too.

Heavy cell phone use tied to poorer sperm quality

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Spending hours on a cell phone each day may affect the quality of a man's sperm, preliminary research suggests.
In a study of 361 men seen at their infertility clinic, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic found an association between the patients' cell phone use and their sperm quality.
On average, the more hours the men spent on their cell phones each day, the lower their sperm count and the greater their percentage of abnormal sperm.
The findings, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, add to questions about the potential health effects of cell phones and other wireless devices. Some studies, for example, have linked long-term cell phone use to a higher risk of brain tumors, though many other studies have found no such connection.
The concern is that, over time, the electromagnetic energy emitted from mobile phones could theoretically harm body tissue -- by damaging DNA, for example.
However, the new findings do not prove that cell phones somehow damage sperm, according to the researchers.
"Our results show a strong association of cell phone use with decreased semen quality. However, they do not prove a cause-and- effect relationship," lead researcher Dr. Ashok Agarwal told Reuters Health.
He and his colleagues based their findings on semen samples from 361 men who came to their infertility clinic over one year. All of the men were questioned about their cell phone habits.
In general, the researchers found, sperm count and sperm quality tended to decline as daily cell phone hours increased. Men who said they used their phones for more than four hours each day had the lowest average sperm count and the fewest normal, viable sperm.
"We infer from our results that heavy cell phone use ... is associated with a lower semen quality," Agarwal said. But whether cell phones somehow directly affect men's fertility is not clear.
Agarwal said he and his colleagues have two studies underway aiming to shed light on the issue. In one, they are exposing semen samples to electromagnetic radiation from cell phones to see what, if any, effects occur.
The second is a follow-up to the current study that is assessing a larger group of men. Agarwal said this study is more rigorously designed and will account for certain other factors like lifestyle habits and occupational exposures that might affect sperm quality.

Rome, 14 Feb.(AKI) - Association of Moroccan Women in Italy president, Souad Sbai, claims that some Muslim women in the north of Italy are being kept chained up in their homes.
"In northern Italy, there are women that live chained at home, from the kitchen to the bathroom, without being able to open the door," said the leader of the women's group.
"In the North,[of Italy] there are 4 and 5 year old girls that wear the [Islamic] veil in the summer, and in the winter. This is the culture of male chauvinists, of fundamentalists - and nobody is shocked," said Sbai.
Sbai also claims that Egypt's Islamist Muslim Brotherhood organistion is slowly 'infiltrating' Italian politics.
Sbai also pointed the finger at many "imams that are ignorant, that are butchers, and have harmed the community."
Her declarations took place during the presentation of a new book by Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena, 'The cost of the veil - Islam's war against women'.
Sbai praised Sgrena's book as "a gift to all Muslim women, for those who suffer, and those who are dead."
Sgrena was held hostage in Iraq in 2005. Her release was secured by Italian intelligence officers, one of whom was shot dead by US soldiers when their vehicle came under fire at a checkpoint as he was escorting Sgrena to Baghdad airport at speed.

Happy Non-Islamic Valentine's Day
I'm deliberately waiting after Valentine's Day to post this out, so as not to cast a dark shadow on one of our nicer non-official secular celebrations.
Some readers have asked why I've not posted much on the Islamic Saharasian thing for awhile. Have I changed my views? Am I getting threatened by the Muslims? No to both.
The simple fact is, one can only study and immerse one's self into such an ocean of repression and horror for so long, and you must pull back. I became over-dosed with the Islamic Horror Show, as reported by various non-mainstream sources and reputable blogs and scholars, something which I experienced years ago in the research and writing of Saharasia. One has to step back, and enjoy life.
But on another level, this also can be dangerous, because in the face of real threats such a contraction against the aggression of others insures their victory, and your own defeat. Doing nothing is not a long-term option, and so I will occasionally be posting on that subject. As with this one.
After having discovered the large Saharasian geographical pattern in human behavior, which over 6000+ years of history has acted as the volcano from which successive waves of patriarchal authoritarian invaders have poured forth to roll over the world, and wipe out or radically alter the social and character structures of softer and lesser-armored peoples around the world, I nevertheless expressed some optimism in my large book on that subject. You might have to search for that optimism, however. It is found, a bit of it, in the very last section on "Saharasia Today" (written c.1980) where I was hoping the contact with Western freedoms in the sexual and family realms might begin to influence the larger Islamic Saharasian cultures, to soften them up. And to an exceedingly small extent it has. However, as Samuel Adams once noted, in discussions on revolutions against an existing power structure: "..it does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds." This obviously worked in the American Revolution against the British Crown, but it also is factually the situation in reactionary political movements aiming to destroy democratic and freedom-oriented social structures, in their desire to seize power and form dictatorships. Or, as with the Islamic world, to transform existing autocratic authoritarian dictatorships, or Islamic cultural enclaves living in relative freedom in Western cities, into increasingly totalitarian fiefdoms ruled by the most ruthless mullahs and other fanatics.
As a reminder of what the West is up against, the relentless nature of the Islamic Plague as it spreads globally, I present below a simple list of headlines as taken from "The Religion of Peace" (ROP) website, http://www.thereligionofpeace.com which tracks such things systematically. Not very pleasant reading, but better to know about it, than to remain passive eating soma and lotus. You can go to the ROP site
As the ROP website reports, as of today, 14 February (Valentine's Day) there have been 10,550 deadly Islamic terror attacks around the world since 9-11, 2001. In case you missed it, that is OVER TEN THOUSAND Islamo-fascist terror attacks! Each of those attacks claimed anywhere from one to dozens of lives, all being distinguished from "ordinary" murders given their religiously-inspired nature, usually being assaults upon strangers -- especially civilians, women and children -- carried out with the typical Islamic Banzai scream, "Allahua Akbar". And most went unreported in any significant measure in the Western press, which continues to play the dhimmi-slave to Islamic aspirations, living in a fantasy world, or being allied with political parties whose leaders believe they can make a gain by ignoring what's going on, or by making alliances with the same terror factions. Geographically, these reports of terror attacks and murders have an almost exact Saharasian pattern, being most concentrated within Saharasia or its immediate borderlands, and most intensive and frequent where Muslims come into social contact with non-Muslims. It has become axiomatic, that most of the worlds "conflict hot-spots" are characterized by angry Muslims who cannot get along with their neighbors, unless those neighbors are slaves or subordinated subjects. Returning to Valentine's Day, it is a good reminder of the stark sex-economic differences between Saharasian Muslims, and the rest of the world. Valentine's Day, a holiday celebrating love, has caught on globally. Everywhere in the world except within Islam, where the fanatics are trying to squash it out of existence, because even within Islam many ordinary people retain the feelings of love, and would like more of it. Saudi Arabia Bans Valentine's Day

America's "friend" in the War on Terror, Saudi Arabia, banned Valentine's Day. The Commission on the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, otherwise known as the Religious Police, even banned the color red on February 14th because of its association with the holiday.
Buying, selling, wearing, or displaying anything red including red roses, clothes, wrapping paper, teddy bears and gift boxes were all illegal on this holiday for those in love. A few days prior to Valentine's Day, flower shops and other stores were warned that they must remove all red items from their shelves. The Religious Police made it clear that they were going to monitor the stores on Valentine's Day to ensure they were not shelving anything displaying the forbidden color. The holiday is illegal because it is considered "un-Islamic". Government authorities let it be known that they were not going to tolerate any public displays of affection on February 14th. Though they claimed that Valentine's Day promotes prohibited relations between unmarried men and women, public expressions of affection between married couples on that date was equally prohibited.
So Valentine's Day love-cards are banned. Red roses are banned. Giving candy is banned (except if it is to celebrate a suicide bomber who just killed some Jews, or Iraqi schoolgirls.) Just as open expressions of heterosexual love are also banned. No hand-holding between boys and girls, or men and women, and no kissing, even of the cheeks. That's preserved only between men, or between women, the latter of whom must be cloaked under heavy curtains to conceal their sexuality as well. And on it goes. Anywhere there is joy in the Islamic world, except when celebrating the latest atrocity or "martyr", then the religious fanatics will be against it. And they explain "why", with twisted mouths and psychotic eyes, that "sexual love is an abomination to Allah". Etc. Valentine's Day, a day for lovers, is considered the "Devil's Day" by the life-hating, woman-hating, love-hating and death-worshiping Islamists. I'm sure some of the Popes and Christian preachers, and rabbis and Hindu holy-men also feel the same way, as must also have the Aztec heart-choppers and African impalers... but honestly it has been many hundreds of years since we had to worry about those groups doing anything approximating what the Muslims are doing globally every day of the week (so please don't email back with the typical moral-equivalence). Since those non-Islamic fanatics don't hold political power like the Muslims do in Saharasian nations, they cannot put much muscle behind their personal demons. We have the chance, for the first times in 6000 years, to put those demons OUT of the world. Except within Islam, which is going to be a much tougher nut to crack.
Read the list below, and be glad you live where you do, which is for most everyone reading this, not within an Islamic nation, and consider how your Valentine's Day might be under the rule of the Mullahs or their hard-leftist comrades, who seem to have no problem whatsoever with bringing Sharia Law into the West.
One last thing. In solidarity with the Danish cartoonists who are still under death threats and attacks for daring to make their postings, a number of internet sites and blogs have once again began publishing one or more of the Muhammed cartoons, with a public call for more public printing of the same. Muslims are now rioting in Denmark because of this -- burning cars, expressions of street-rage, yelling "death to this" and "death to that", etc. Read this:

Denmark Burning
Muslim "youths" have continued rioting across Denmark, with violence in its fourth day and a photographer for Jyllands Posten newspaper being beaten in the street. Jyllands Posten is the publication that printed the infamous Muhammad cartoons in September of 2005 that led to uproar across Europe and the Muslim world. Seventeen Danish papers reprinted the cartoons in response to news that an immigrant Islamist terror cell had been apprehended plotting the murder of one of the cartoonists.
Violence has been reported in immigrant areas of Copenhagen and Aarhus, with mobs of "youths" burning vehicles and garbage receptacles. Seventeen were arrested in Copehnhagen.
The MSM is again mostly not reporting any of this, or they are scolding the cartoonists once again. How dare they. Yes, and also how dare women to walk in Muslim neighborhoods without the veil. When they are beaten up and gang-raped, obviously it was their own fault. Same with the Jews who get knifed or beaten to a pulp, somebody should have told them, that Jewishness also is an "offense against Islam". And if you eat a hamburger on the street during Ramadan, you should make certain no Muslims are nearby, as you will offend them. And no more piggy-banks either.
Clearly the Islamo-fascist youth gangs, orchestrated by the Mullah-Generals, are making it clear they will NOT accept Western laws or freedoms of the press, or of speech, nor free behavior by any of their neighbor infidels, wherever they can use raw muscle and threats to get their way. They simply ignore our laws, or abuse them as a weapon against efforts to expose their hate-speech and violence (as with the Canadians censoring down Mark Steyn, or the Dutch or Italian dhimmis suppressing Hirsi Ali or Oriana Fallaci. Or they use brute force against selected targets, to remind everyone what happens to dissenters and uppity women, precisely because the local governing authorities are too weak-minded and weak-kneed to use existing police powers to protect their own citizens against this kind of theocratic mob violence. If it were a Christian mob rioting in the streets, they would have already tear-gassed and clubbed them into submission. But for Muslims, Oh, we cannot be too kind! So the street violence goes on night after night, over years in fact in France, and it is considered a "peaceful night" when only a hundred cars are burned, rather than a thousand.
I also post one of the more "offensive" (but accurate) of the Danish cartoons here -- Mr. Bomb-Head Muhammed -- just to show how ridiculous and benign is this sketching in relation to the murderous outrage being expressed on the streets of Europe. I do so in solidarity with the Danes, and invite everyone to pass this Muhammed cartoon widely in internet emails, blogs, websites, etc. If Muslims get their way, to demand special treatment and "respect" on this matter, to have such cartoons banished from public spaces, then soon enough we will be told to "buzz off" whenever a young girl has her throat sliced open in the middle of the street within Islamic enclaves. Already this sort of things is happening -- gang rapes, beatings, car burnings, and Mullahs telling the local police to "buzz off". And where Muslims are a part of the police forces, the problem gets compounded, as seen in the UK today where runaway girls -- running away from forced-arranged rape-marriages, from genital mutilations, or threats of honor murdering by their male relatives -- are being forcibly returned to the same oppressive homes and mosques by Islamic cops. Isn't that how it began in the Third Reich also? Where SA goons smashed Jewish businesses and engaged in street murders, while the German police stood by, doing nothing except laughing? The Muslims joining Western police forces may have taken training and oaths to uphold the Constitutional Law of the UK or USA, but too often they make it absolutely clear that their first and foremost loyalties are to the Koran, and to their local Muslim fellows. Islamic police in the West are thereby slowly emerging as the new Sharia Enforcers, the arrival of the dreaded Mukbarat, the Religious Police, right on the streets of Western cities, and about which nobody in power does anything except to make one apology after another for the worst of the fanatics. And it is already here in Dearborne, Michigan and a few other places in the USA, where Muslim cab drivers refuse to take people with dogs, or carrying liquor. Europe is much farther down this path than the Americas, and seems lost to eventual Islamic rule by the demographic figures, unless there is some authentic and strong-willed defense of Western freedoms by our leaders. Otherwise, at some point we will instead observe the resurgence of anti-immigrant sentiments with overtones of the Vikings or Saxons -- with Civil War. Europeans will hardly believe it, and I have many friends in Europe who hold strong contrary opinions. But they uniformly resist to spend any time reviewing the "facts on the ground", about the demographic growth of Islamic populations over non-Islamic "native Europeans". The birth rates are perhaps 20 to 1 in favor of the Muslims, and they are not assimilating Western values. Rather, they are importing the values of Cairo, Damascus, Kabul, and Mecca.
If Muslims can screech and burn and have mob rule in the streets over a cartoon, then certainly the wholesale banishment of free press and free speech will not be far behind. With only 50 years having passed since the burning of Wilhelm Reich's books, by medical/journalist mobs with only 1/10th the venom and pathos of the Islamic mobs, and with the vast majority of scientists, doctors and ordinary people merely uttering "ho-hum" when his books were thrown into the bonfires, then alarm bells ought to be ringing loudly. Instead, the majority continues eating lotus and soma. The ordinary character-neurotic individual of the West, with their own sexual frustrations and often ungratified or pathological sexuality, has a greater potential to hook-up with the woman-hating, sexually-twisted love-haters of Islam, than to resist their Emotional Plague and fight on the side of sexual freedom and happiness. The current struggle is, at its core, a struggle in favor of, or against, sexual happiness and love.

What Rowan Williams wishes upon us is an abomination and I write here as a modern Muslim woman. He lectures the nation on the benefits of sharia law - made by bearded men, for men - and wants the alternative legal system to be accommodated within our democracy in the spirit of inclusion and cohesion.
Pray tell me sir, how do separate and impenetrable courts and schools and extreme female segregation promote commonalities and deep bonds between citizens of these small isles?
What he did on Thursday was to convince other Britons, white, black and brown, that Muslims want not equality but exceptionalism and their own domains. Enlightened British Muslims quail. Friends like this churchman do us more harm than our many enemies. He passes round what he believes to be the benign libation of tolerance. It is laced with arsenic.
He would not want his own girls and women, I am sure, to "choose" to be governed by these laws he breezily endorses. And he is naive to the point of folly if he imagines it is possible to pick and choose the bits that are relatively nice to the girls or ones that seem to dictate honourable financial transactions.
Look around the Islamic world where sharia rules and, in every single country, these ordinances reduce our human value to less than half that is accorded a male; homosexuals are imprisoned or killed, children have no free voice or autonomy, authoritarianism rules and infantilises populations.
What's more, different Muslim nations claim to have their own allegedly god-given sharia. In Saudi Arabia, women cannot drive (What in Allah's name could the Koran have warned about cars?). In Bangladesh and Pakistan, they have no such bar to driving, although increasingly Saudi Wahabi Islam is taking over and we see Saudi sharia taking hold.
It is growing in influence here, too. Ten years ago, the only fully shrouded Muslim women around were from the Arab fiefdoms, the many wives of sheikhs often drawn by cartoonists to convey the absurdity and inhumanity of such cloaks. Now all of Europe has these girls and women rendering themselves invisible in public spaces. It is their elected sharia, so they claim without credibility. There is no agreed body of sharia, it is all drafted by males and the most cruel is now claiming absolute authority.
In Pakistan, on the statutes are strictures on adultery introduced by the military dictator Zia ul-Haq. Women activists in that country have given their lives protesting against the injustice of those laws where women suspected of adultery, or rape victims, are punished in hideous ways and the man goes free.
The Iranian theocracy changes its regulations from year to year, capriciously playing with the lives of females. The morality police hound women and girls, beat them up, imprison them for showing an ankle, walking too provocatively or singing in the streets. They fight back but are ground down eventually.
Two Iranian friends chose to die rather than live under the demeaning religious orders. Go to Afghanistan if you fancy a 12-year-old bride - a practice approved by the mullahs. That's sharia for you. Many women, gay men and dissidents came to Britain to escape Islamic tyrants and their laws. Dr Williams supports those laws and, by default, makes the refugees victims again.
Four years ago, a Saudi woman in her fifties came to my home. She was divorced from a Saudi prince who had sent her away and kept her children. What she said about sharia cannot be repeated. She had money, this princess, but no parental rights and she howled like a child in excruciating pain in my living room.
Yet, family disputes, says Dr Williams, would be easier, within sharia. For whom exactly? The polygamous men who live in this country, yes, certainly. Not for their wives who will be told that God intends them to lower their eyes and accept unjust verdicts.
Many will be sent back to bastard husbands or flinty-eyed mullahs will take their children away. In Bradford and Halifax, they may be forbidden to drive or work where men are employed. Adultery will be punished. I don't think we will have public stonings but violence of some sort will be meted out (it already is) with lawmakers' backing.
Sensing the drift in their direction, British sharia "experts" today shamelessly direct female medical students not to wash their forearms, essential to prevent the spread of infections, because that exposes their flesh.
Does the Archbishop even know that sharia comes in many guises and that several schools of jurisprudence have their own versions? The list is long - Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi, Hanbali, Jafari, Salafi and on and on. Ayatollah Khomeini preferred his DIY set of crimes and punishments when he came to power.
No women are allowed to be imams or serious jurists, so cannot help make their own fair and free set of female-friendly sharia. All the systems insist on ultimate truths, hard certainties. Sharia cannot provide solutions to the complex challenges of modern life and many violate fundamental human rights as established by the United Nations.
Taj Hargey, a historian and Islamic theologian, runs the Muslim Education Centre in Oxford. He, with me, is a trustee of British Muslims For Secular Democracy which is attempting to educate Muslims out of authorised obscurantism and non-Muslims into a better understanding of the progressive and evolutionary nature of the practice of Islam.
He is incandescent that Dr Williams backs a perilous Islamic conservatism, already too powerful in Britain: "Sharia is nothing but a human concoction of medieval religious opinion, largely archaic and outmoded and irrelevant to life today. Most sharia contradicts the letter and spirit of the Koran, distorts the transcendental text."
During his sermons Dr Hargey explains to congregations that, for example there is no blasphemy in the Koran, that the Prophet himself allowed a man to mock the divine revelations. Apostasy, says the holy text, will be dealt with by Allah in the afterlife. Sharia policemen insist apostates should be tortured and killed.
Dr Williams says Muslims want the choice to opt for sharia. What he believes to be choice is, in truth, inner compulsion, the result of brainwashing which begins in the madrassas when girls and boys are young enough to mould.
I have often admired the Archbishop's lofty thoughts, his intellectualism, the passion for human rights, his guts when the Government needs to be chastised. But this time his kind indulgences betray his own invaluable principles and deliver Muslim women, girls and dissidents into the hands of religious persecutors - an unforgivable intervention, which I hope he now sincerely regrets.

Work Democracy, Politics, and the Governance of Society
During the same time period Reich was doing his bion research and enduring the vicious press campaign against it, he began writing on "work democracy," a phrase he coined in 1937. His writings on this topic continued up to the very end of his life. Prof. Bennett will explain this concept fully and share some of the results of his research work in the Archive of the Orgone Institute, about which Kevin Hinchey will speak at the beginning of the day.
Philip Bennett, Ph.D., is a semi-retired college professor, currently teaching in the Graduate School of Education at Fairfield University, in Connecticut.
In addition there will be a discussion of Reich's bion research. The day will conclude with a
Panel Discussion, a which time Dr. Harry Lewis puts questions to each of the speakers.

Dr. Håvard Nilsen:
The Troll Circle: The Social Construction of Wilhelm Reich as Pseudo-Scientist
Dr. Nilsen explores how the view of Reich as a pseudo-scientist with regards to his bion work was socially constructed by the Norwegian government. This fascinating paper includes a discussion of the relationship between Reich and Trotsky.
Håvard Nilsen, Ph.D., is a Research Fellow, in the Department of History at the University of Oslo, Norway.
