300,000 Muslim Americans Support Suicide Bombing...

An estimated 300,000 American Muslims consider suicide bombing to be
an acceptable thing, with over 100,000 openly supporting Al Qaeda --
and those figures do not include the high percentages which refused
to answer the questions put to them in a recent Pew Research opinion
poll. Of course a large percentage of American Muslims don't support
either al-Qaeda or suicide bombers, and came to the USA precisely to
get away from that madness. But the study of Muslim-American
opinions indicates, the hatred of infidels which characterizes the
mass-murdering going on across Islamic Saharasia is being imported
into the USA in high percentages. Pew Research group which produced
the report is a liberal outfit, and has done its very best, along
with the MSM, to spin the results so as to misportray American
Muslims as overwhelmingly "mainstream American". This view is,
simply, a lie-of-omission. The Pew Research report did not bother to
ask other pertinent questions, such as "Do you support Sharia Law,
polygamy, female genital mutilations, arranged marriages", and such,
which are also central indicators for the overall Islamo-fascist
worldview.

If you heard the report on the MSM, about how American Muslims are
assimilating into mainstream American society, think again, you have
been deliberately deceived. To my knowledge, only the conservative
Fox News channel carried any criticism of those Pew reports, while
the liberal-left news channels put a smiley-face on them. The
following links provide the original Pew Report, as well as a
clear-eyed review of the actual numbers, looking beyond the
superficial facade of fakery laid thick like plaster over those
numbers by so many in efforts to conceal what they really are telling
us. J.D.

The Bloodthirsty Bastards of Islam

Below is a video link from Qubetv showing the stoning of two women by
fanatically happy Muslim men screaching "Allahua Akbar!" Oh, we all
know intellectually that this goes on. But to see it openly on a
video puts flesh and blood to the matter, quite literally as these
women are torn apart by flying rocks.

What did these women do!? Dress improperly?! Get raped!? Why does
none of this ever reach the MSM, when the same media prints every
nasty accusation, true or not, against the West and USA and Israel?!
They will spend hours going on about an Iraqi terrorist who is
slapped, or when a Koran is touched by a "filthy infidel", or dropped
into a toilet, or when Muslims "are insulted" by cartoons. On all
those counts, and a whole lot more, anyone who complains about Islam
is cast as a bad person, an "Islamo-phobe", someone who
"misunderstands" Islam.

But this outrage documented below, like Medieval burning of women by
the Christians, who properly are chastized for the genocidal crimes
of the old Church leaders and followers, this time showing a Mullah
standing by and giving the "GO" command after which the rocks start
flying, and which happens probably daily in the Muslim world,
including in the cities of our "allies" Saudi Arabia, they will not
touch! They won't even mention it.

So where are the so-called "moderate Muslims"? Why aren't they
screaming protests to stop this cruel and pittiless madness!? Do
they in fact support it, just as the recent opinion polls suggest,
that the majority of American muslims cannot bring themselves to
condemn Osama Bin Ladin, either openly supporting him, or refusing to
answer the question!?

And where are the "liberal" women's groups!? Where are the "human
rights" groups!? Where is that loud and boisterous,
out-in-the-street, quick-to-protest International Fist-Shaking
Sign-Holding Left, and the calmer liberal social establishment?!
They are silent! Or they are simply too busy condemning the "evil
West" and "evil Zionists", to bother taking a look at what's going on
when large groups of Muslim men begin chanting "Allahua Akbar"!

Warning.

Here's another GGGW debunking film - a nice rebuttal to Gore, what he all-too-conveniently did not mention in his propaganda flic.  Just shows, if you are a handsome and flashy politician, all the young fashionable people will line up to buy tickets like going to a rock concert, and you'll get all the applause and adoration of the mindless crowds, no matter how totally wrong and fabricated is your message.  But the overweight awkward guy in the rumpled suit gets no respect, even though he has the facts, and is the real truth-teller.  Beware the fashionable handsome fascists.  Caligula was quite tall, handsome and fashionable.  Claudius was a cowed fumbler and stutterer.  If you don't know the difference between them, and what they respectively did, then learn it for a life-lesson.  Grandma used to say "you can't judge a book by its cover", just as true today.  Slick politics is always to be distrusted.

A view of Islam from "bombislam", set to heavy-metal rock music.  I find the music awful, and most of the video quite ghastly and blood-curdling, a real shocker I would normally pass by -- but it is noted here because it starts out with video clips of French Muslims rioting in October 2005, with their screams of "Allahua Akbar", amid bombed, burned-out buses and cars.  Some people claimed this never happened, that the rioting "youths" in France were "economically distressed individuals", and not young Muslims out to punish the dirty infidels in "their" neighborhoods.  Also more pics of Hamas-Hezbollah making Nazi salutes, in honor of the author of the second-best-selling book in the Muslim world (next to the Koran, which very much agrees with the second-best-seller) .  Islam arms, builds, prepares, and revels in blood-gore, but the West mostly sleeps.

More evidence that black-racism (black hatred of and violence towards white people) and victimhood ideology is the major racial problem in the USA today. Hirsi Ali's Challenge to Humanity

This is not only about Hirsi Ali.  Killing people, even little kids, who dare to hold affectionate feelings for, or who might have even the most innocent of human contacts with the opposite sex, is the issue.  Hatred of sexuality is the issue.  An organized system of hate and violence against heterosexuality, and against women specifically, and against children, is the issue.  The fact that such impulses of hatred and violence are organized under the umbrella of the Muslim "religion" -- a codified system of theft and rapine violence directed primarily against the vanquished unbelievers, as developed by warrior-nomads living in the dead-heart deserts of Arabia --  is no excuse to tolerate it, even in the slightest measure.  We must find a way to shed the addiction to their horrid petroleum, which gives them the gigantic cash resources by which this bloody jihad-filth is being exported around the world.  J.D.

Hirsi Ali's Challenge to Humanity

By Caroline B. Glick
FrontPageMagazine.com | May 11, 2007

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is arguably the bravest and most remarkable woman of our times.

To understand why this 37-year-old woman is extraordinary, she must be assessed in the context of the forces pitted against her in her twin struggles to force the Western world to take note of Islam's divinely ordained enslavement of women, and to force the Islamic world to account for it.
A series of incidents this week placed the forces she battles in stark relief. Sunday Muslims shot up the Omariyah elementary school in Gaza. One man was killed and six were wounded in the onslaught. The murderers attacked because the UN-run school in Rafah had organized a sports day for the children, in which little boys would be playing with little girls.

The idea that that boys and girls might play sports together was too much for the righteous believers. It was an insult to Islam, they said. And so they decided to kill the little boys and girls.
On May 3, in Gujrat, Pakistan, Muslims detonated a bomb at the gate of a girls' school. Their righteous wrath was raised by the notion that girls would learn to read and write. That too, they felt, is an insult to Islam.

On April 28, US soldiers in Iraq discovered detonation wires across the street from the newly built Huda Girls' school in Tarmiya, north of Baghdad. They followed the wire to its source and discovered the school had been built as a deathtrap. The pious Muslims who constructed the school had filled propane tanks with explosives and buried them beneath the floor. They built artillery shells into the ceiling and the floor. To save the world for Allah, they decided to butcher little girls.

And the brutality is not limited to the Middle East. Last month in Oslo, Norway, Norwegian-Somali women's rights activist Kadra was brutally beaten by a crowd of men piously calling out "Allah Akhbar." She was attacked for exposing the fact that inside their mosques in Norway, Norwegian imams praise female genital mutilation in the name of Allah.
Late last year Hirsi Ali published her memoir, Infidel. In describing her own life, what she actually explains are the two competing human impulses - conformity and individualism. In her own life, the clash of the two has been played out on the stage of Islamic ascendance and Western cultural collapse.

Hirsi Ali was born in Somalia to a politically active father who sought to free his country from Said Barre's Marxist dictatorship. Forced to flee the country with her family, Hirsi Ali's childhood in Arabia and Africa revolved along the axis of Islamic ascendance at the hand of the Saudi-financed Muslim Brotherhood and Khomeini's Iran.

Hirsi Ali's rebellion against Islam was personal, not political. As a young girl and later as a young woman, she found herself abused and stifled by the dictates of Islam just as her youthful spirit wished most to take flight. As a five-year-old in Somalia, she screamed in pain and shock when her grandmother tied her down and had a man with a knife mutilate her genitals.
Living in Saudi Arabia she was struck by the oppressiveness of the "true Islam." Why, she wondered were she and her mother and sister prohibited from leaving their apartment without a male relative escorting them? As an adolescent in Nairobi she wondered why the enjoyment she felt in the company of boys was sinful.

Why did her mother need to suffer the humiliation of polygamy? Why could she not choose her own husband? Why was she told by one and all that her normal human impulses to seek love, respect and compassion and think for herself were sinful and evil?

As she puts it, "I could never comprehend the downright unfairness of the rules, especially for women. How could a just God - a God so just that almost every page of the Koran praises his fairness - desire that women be treated so unfairly? When the [Islamic teachers] told us that a woman's testimony is worth half of a man's, I would think, Why? If God is merciful, why did He demand that His creatures be hanged in public? If He was compassionate, then why did unbelievers have to go to Hell?"

In her words, "The spark of will inside me grew even as I studied and practiced to submit." Ali credits Harlequin romance novels for her initial mental deliverance from submission. These books, with their passionate loves and steamy sex scenes were her first glimpse at the possibility of freedom. The novels showed her that the emotions and desires she was told to repress were natural and could even be beautiful and right.

Her impulse to rebel was matched by her impulse to conform. As a teenager, Hirsi Ali tried to be a faithful Muslim and even joined the Muslim Brotherhood. Embracing the notion of submission she began wearing a full-body burka.

But try as she might, she could not accept that her own will had no inherent value. She blamed the preachers for the terror she saw as a Muslim girl, believing they must be distorting the Koran. "Surely," she writes, "Allah could not have said that men should beat their wives when they were disobedient? Surely a woman's statement in court should be worth the same as a man's?"
Yet, when she sat down and read the Koran on her own, she found that everything the preachers had said was written in the book.

At 21, Hirsi Ali emancipated herself. Fleeing from an arranged marriage to a Somali immigrant in Canada, she sought and received asylum in Holland. There, she embraced Dutch society and freedoms and quickly flourished in a true rag-to-riches immigrant tale. She learned Dutch fluently and began supporting herself as a translator. In just four years she had bridged the cultural divide between Africa and Europe and began studying political science with the creme de la creme of Dutch society at the University of Leiden.

A mere decade after her arrival, as a naturalized Dutch citizen, she was a pubic figure, an outspoken social critic of Islam in Europe. In January 2003, she was elected to Parliament as a member of the conservative Liberal Party.

In Holland, Hirsi Ali found herself confronted by a kinder, gentler type of cultural tyranny - the moral relativism of political correctness and multiculturalism dictated by the Left. Just as she rejected Islamic oppression in Africa, so in Holland she refused to submit to the will of the majority not to notice, judge or take action against the misogynist tyranny and anti-Western culture of the Muslim minority.

Hirsi Ali's labors brought her to Theo Van Gogh. In 2004 the two produced the film Submission, Part One. The short film shows a young Muslim woman wearing a see-through burka. Passages of the Koran permitting the abuse of women are written on her body. The woman prays in submission to Allah all the while noting her abject suffering in his name. At the end of the movie, the woman raises her head to Allah and calls into question the reasonableness of her submission.
The film's provocative message placed both Hirsi Ali and Van Gogh's lives in imminent danger. And on November 21, 2004 Van Gogh was butchered by a Dutch Muslim on the streets of Amsterdam. The murderer stabbed a letter into Van Gogh's chest in which he threatened to murder Hirsi Ali "in the name of Allah Most Gracious and Most Merciful."

While Hirsi Ali was forced to flee her home and live under armed guard in army installations, her message proved too much of a challenge for the Dutch establishment which vomited her out last year. Her own party found a formality on which to revoke her citizenship and throw her out of the country and the parliament. Although the public outcry that ensued forced the government to restore her citizenship, the message was clear.

Hirsi Ali moved to Washington, DC. As a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute she continues to warn the West of the dangers of Islam and of Western cultural disintegration under the tyranny of multiculturalism. Just last month, her work brought an imam from Pittsburgh to call for her murder for the crime of apostasy.

In her life and work, Hirsi Ali personifies the central challenges of our times. She holds a mirror up to the Islamic world and demands that it contend with the evil it propagates in the name of divinity.

She holds a mirror up to the Free World and demands that we defend our freedom against the onslaught of moral relativism and cultural decline.

So too, she demands our compassion for the women of Islam. She says we must see the suffering beneath the veil and work to alleviate it. Whether it means that we must mass produce and distribute Arabic and Urdu copies of Harlequin romance novels throughout the Islamic world; challenge veiled women to explain why they ascribe to a faith that gives men the divine right to beat and rape women; or simply hold Muslim communities in the West to the standards of freedom on which our civilization is based, the West must help these women free themselves from oppression.

Finally, in our own societies we must protect and uphold voices like Hirsi Ali's. For the past five years, Hirsi Ali has lived under threat of death for her views.

We must understand that only when she, and people like her can walk on the streets unafraid will we have properly defended our freedom.

**PS** to "Soloway's Transformation"

This note did not transmit correctly with the Soloway item recently
posted, and I believe is worthwhile, even necessary, if one
undertakes to read his full interview:

Soloway overviews his own personal migration from liberal-left
traditions, as a youth of the 1960s student movement, towards a more
conservative and realistic (and accurate) view of the world following
9-11. He is not alone in this transformation, but certainly is one
of the more expressive articulators of the reasons why this happened:
The intellectual bankruptcy and vicious nature of the political left
which abandoned so many of its prior essentials, thereby showings
it's true colors in Red Fascism, rather than authentic liberal
democratic tradition. Read the Soloway interview for quite a good
listing on this, if you are missing the point. But I do wish to note
his cynicism at the end of the interview, or perhaps his "realism" is
a better word, given the near-impossibility to classify the larger
utopian efforts of the 20th Century as anything but a collection of
one horrifying genocide after another. But Soloway appears to know
not of Reich's discovery of human armoring, nor of the biological
core or secondary-layer impulses, principles which have been
systematically erased from or distorted within the usual academic and
intellectual discourse, and which help us to understand why societies
fail, why social-reform movements so often collapse into new
authoritarianisms. Soloway also knows not of the findings in
Saharasia, or of the peaceful period in human prehistory, even as
articulated in the more popular books of Maria Gimbutas or Riane
Eisler -- they, too, along with my Saharasia, are relegated to the
"back of the bus" by modern academics and intellectuals, so this
omission is not particularly surprising. But he is absolutely
correct in articulating a warning to be suspicious of the "Big Lie"
as voiced by those on the Islamified or Stalinized Left, wanting to
chuck overboard the existing forms of problematical social
organization in the Western liberal democracies in favor of
ill-defined and untested, or fully proven-destructed socialistic
sentiments for which only the Mass Grave stands as it's historical
marker. This is especially true regarding the Left-groups who today
are making open political alliances with Islamic terror factions, who
unashamedly voice open Jew-hatred and anti-democratic, anti-Western
language reminiscent of the old "National" Socialists, and for whom
Muslim Brown-Shirts pushing for Sharia Law, and burning 500+ cars
every night as in France, provide the muscle. By contrast to them,
and for all the warts and serious flaws, the post-Civil-Rights,
post-women's-movement modern Western democracies stand a light-year
farther along on the road towards emotional and sexual health. J.D.

The Big Lie: On Terror, Antisemitism, and Identity

By Jamie Glazov
FrontPageMagazine.com | May 9, 2007
Frontpage Interview's guest today is David Solway, the award-winning author of over twenty-five books of poetry, criticism, educational theory, and travel. He is a contributor to magazines as varied as the Atlantic, the Sewanee Review, Books in Canada, and the Partisan Review. He is the author of the new book, The Big Lie: On Terror, Antisemitism, and Identity.

FP: David Solway, welcome to Frontpage Interview.

Solway: Both a pleasure and an honor.

FP: Can you give us a background in regards to your political odyssey as a member of the Political Faith up until 9/11?

Solway: As I write in the preface to The Big Lie, I was a product of the utopian 60s with its belief that all our problems could be solved by the exercise of tolerance, sympathy, openness to other's views and the practice of what I might call an oceanic love for Mother Earth and all her suffering children. Inevitably, such vast, undifferentiated sentiments led to their opposites -- narcissism, an unwavering belief in our own undoubted rectitude, political dogmatism and a lack of tolerance for all those who did not endorse our views. This is not to say that many good things did not happen, the Civil Rights movement and the anti-Vietnam protests in particular, but in the end we became a cohort of self-righteous prigs--rampant sex not withstanding--convinced that we could change the world with our music, our slogans, our reversion to the "natural" symbolized by the long hair we grew pro forma (I had a friend who would spend hours every day sitting on the floor and willing his hair to grow), the use of herbal stimulants to help us break the mental shackles our society had imposed upon us, the flouting of normative dress codes, and our love affair with the oppressed of the world.

I was very much a part of this Arcadian Jacuzzi, a member of the approved Left, anti-American, anti-Zionist and pro-Palestinian, anti-colonialist, anti-corporatist, embracing all the multicultural pieties of the times. When I was a student at Berkeley, I used to hang out with Mario Savio and the guys and gals who roistered in the cafes and bars on Telegraph Avenue. You might say I was a fringe member of the Free Speech Movement.

But none of us were much given to self-interrogation. We felt like the Fifth Monarchy men of the modern age, a new Model Army of youthful saints marching toward the dawning millennium, cherishing our quixotic dream that war, hatred and inequality could be abolished once and for all, that human being were essentially good, and that all distinctions between people could be healed and transcended. Make love, not war.

So we made love while wars proliferated across the planet. By the way, it's not all that different today, only instead of making love, we make speeches. Those on the political Left today are the heirs of the visionary 1960s, smoking a different kind of Maryjane, popping another sort of LSD, toking up on the rhetoric of climate change, of poor abused terrorists deprived of their legal rights, on the sanctity of different cultures despite their violation of human rights and the infliction of cruelty, on the need to expiate the sins of our ancestors, and so on. So instead of Mario Savio and Daniel Cohn-Bendit, we have Al Gore, Michael Moore, Jack Layton and Elizabeth May. Plus ca change.

Announcing "QubeTV"

Most viewers of YouTube or Google Video products are unaware of large
battles, behind the scenes, where anyone posting materials considered
"politically incorrect" have had their materials removed and
themselves prevented from further postings. Both organizations are
dominated by political groups or individuals of clearly liberal-left
sentiments, and so the content of censored materials has been
predictably that of conservative politic, exposing Islamic
atrocities, or non-PC satire (as with the Muhammed cartoons).

A nice reversal is available on QubeTV where a growing collection of
banished items, including those forbidden Muhammed cartoons, are now
available, ready to offend the hyper-sensitive, or
perpetually-outraged.

Bryson on CO2 - Another Breath of Fresh Air

Decades ago, Reid Bryson argued that desert-spreading and dusts could trigger droughts and deserts at great distance.  And that by controlling herd animals and destructive agricultural practices, preserving forests and grasslands at the periphery of the desert, those "climates of hunger" landscapes could return back to a vegetated condition which would naturally suppress those same dusts, thereby lowering drought-potentials (and heat-waves) at a distance, and shrinking the overall size of the world's deserts.  His "dust theory" was rejected by the meteorologists, who claimed it was insufficient to explain observed physical effects of sand particles on water vapor, which was an accurate criticism, but missed the point entirely, that both historical events and actual experiments showed Bryson's arguments were fundamentally correct.

The article below only touches upon this aspect of his work, which transpired at the same time Wilhelm Reich was fleshing out his discovery of the orgone energy, and the phenomenon of dorish atmospheric stagnation -- the energetic part of desert atmospheres quite apart from the dusts they might carry, and which both Bryson and the meteorologists could hardly know about.  It is the stagnated condition of the Earth's orgone field which appears to be the more fundamental phenomenon standing behind droughts and heat-waves, something which is proven correct when good cloudbusting operations are performed in those same desert-drought regions.  One can literally see the increased transparency in the atmosphere, often within hours, something which is impossible if the haze-factor is composed only of "sand particles".  Like most else truly important, however, both were disparaged, and are today marginalized.  Bryson does not say it, but as early as the 1970s, he was basically de-funded and could not take additional students (I wanted to study with him, and so know about it.)

Even with the gigantic Saharasian Dust-Dor Cloud staring them in the face on a daily basis*, the World Politic and UN, and the "meteorologists" are worried about CO2 gas, a natural substance existing in only trace quantities within the atmosphere, and whose tiny effects upon the heat-balance of Earth has always been overwhelmed by water vapor and clouds.  J.D.

Used copies of Bryson's "Climates of Hunger" are available at Amazon.com for less than a buck, well worth the read.

The Faithful Heretic
A Wisconsin Icon Pursues Tough Questions

Some people are lucky enough to enjoy their work, some are lucky enough to love it, and then there's Reid Bryson. At age 86, he's still hard at it every day, delving into the science some say he invented.

Reid A. Bryson holds the 30th PhD in Meteorology granted in the history of American education. Emeritus Professor and founding chairman of the University of Wisconsin Department of Meteorology-now the Department of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences-in the 1970s he became the first director of what's now the UW's Gaylord Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies. He's a member of the United Nations Global 500 Roll of Honor-created, the U.N. says, to recognize "outstanding achievements in the protection and improvement of the environment." He has authored five books and more than 230 other publications and was identified by the British Institute of Geographers as the most frequently cited climatologist in the world.

Long ago in the Army Air Corps, Bryson and a colleague prepared the aviation weather forecast that predicted discovery of the jet stream by a group of B-29s flying to and from Tokyo. Their warning to expect westerly winds at 168 knots earned Bryson and his friend a chewing out from a general-and the general's apology the next day when he learned they were right. Bryson flew into a couple of typhoons in 1944, three years before the Weather Service officially did such things, and he prepared the forecast for the homeward flight of the Enola Gay. Back in Wisconsin, he built a program at the UW that's trained some of the nation's leading climatologists.

How Little We Know

Bryson is a believer in climate change, in that he's as quick as anyone to acknowledge that Earth's climate has done nothing but change throughout the planet's existence. In fact, he took that knowledge a big step further, earlier than probably anyone else. Almost 40 years ago, Bryson stood before the American Association for the Advancement of Science and presented a paper saying human activity could alter climate.

"I was laughed off the platform for saying that," he told Wisconsin Energy Cooperative News.

In the 1960s, Bryson's idea was widely considered a radical proposition. But nowadays things have turned almost in the opposite direction: Hardly a day passes without some authority figure claiming that whatever the climate happens to be doing, human activity must be part of the explanation. And once again, Bryson is challenging the conventional wisdom.

"Climate's always been changing and it's been changing rapidly at various times, and so something was making it change in the past," he told us in an interview this past winter. "Before there were enough people to make any difference at all, two million years ago, nobody was changing the climate, yet the climate was changing, okay?"

"All this argument is the temperature going up or not, it's absurd," Bryson continues. "Of course it's going up. It has gone up since the early 1800s, before the Industrial Revolution, because we're coming out of the Little Ice Age, not because we're putting more carbon dioxide into the air."

Little Ice Age? That's what chased the Vikings out of Greenland after they'd farmed there for a few hundred years during the Mediaeval Warm Period, an earlier run of a few centuries when the planet was very likely warmer than it is now, without any help from industrial activity in making it that way. What's called "proxy evidence"-assorted clues extrapolated from marine sediment cores, pollen specimens, and tree-ring data-helps reconstruct the climate in those times before instrumental temperature records existed.

We ask about that evidence, but Bryson says it's second-tier stuff. "Don't talk about proxies," he says. "We have written evidence, eyeball evidence. When Eric the Red went to Greenland, how did he get there? It's all written down."

Bryson describes the navigational instructions provided for Norse mariners making their way from Europe to their settlements in Greenland. The place was named for a reason: The Norse farmed there from the 10th century to the 13th, a somewhat longer period than the United States has existed. But around 1200 the mariners' instructions changed in a big way. Ice became a major navigational reference. Today, old Viking farmsteads are covered by glaciers.

Bryson mentions the retreat of Alpine glaciers, common grist for current headlines. "What do they find when the ice sheets retreat, in the Alps?"

We recall the two-year-old report saying a mature forest and agricultural water-management structures had been discovered emerging from the ice, seeing sunlight for the first time in thousands of years. Bryson interrupts excitedly.

"A silver mine! The guys had stacked up their tools because they were going to be back the next spring to mine more silver, only the snow never went," he says. "There used to be less ice than now. It's just getting back to normal."

What Leads, What Follows?

What is normal? Maybe continuous change is the only thing that qualifies. There's been warming over the past 150 years and even though it's less than one degree, Celsius, something had to cause it. The usual suspect is the "greenhouse effect," various atmospheric gases trapping solar energy, preventing it being reflected back into space.

We ask Bryson what could be making the key difference:

Q: Could you rank the things that have the most significant impact and where would you put carbon dioxide on the list?

A: Well let me give you one fact first. In the first 30 feet of the atmosphere, on the average, outward radiation from the Earth, which is what CO2 is supposed to affect, how much [of the reflected energy] is absorbed by water vapor? In the first 30 feet, 80 percent, okay?

Q: Eighty percent of the heat radiated back from the surface is absorbed in the first 30 feet by water vaporĀŠ

A: And how much is absorbed by carbon dioxide? Eight hundredths of one percent. One one-thousandth as important as water vapor. You can go outside and spit and have the same effect as doubling carbon dioxide.
This begs questions about the widely publicized mathematical models researchers run through supercomputers to generate climate scenarios 50 or 100 years in the future. Bryson says the data fed into the computers overemphasizes carbon dioxide and accounts poorly for the effects of clouds-water vapor. Asked to evaluate the models' long-range predictive ability, he answers with another question: "Do you believe a five-day forecast?"
Bryson says he looks in the opposite direction, at past climate conditions, for clues to future climate behavior.

Trying that approach in the weeks following our interview, Wisconsin Energy Cooperative News soon found six separate papers about Antarctic ice core studies, published in peer-reviewed scientific journals between 1999 and 2006. The ice core data allowed researchers to examine multiple climate changes reaching back over the past 650,000 years. All six studies found atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations tracking closely with temperatures, but with CO2 lagging behind changes in temperature, rather than leading them. The time lag between temperatures moving up-or down-and carbon dioxide following ranged from a few hundred to a few thousand years.

Renaissance Man, Marathon Man

When others were laughing at the concept, Reid Bryson was laying the ground floor for scientific investigation of human impacts on climate. We asked UW Professor Ed Hopkins, the assistant state climatologist, about the significance of Bryson's work in advancing the science he's now practiced for six decades.

"His contributions are manifold," Hopkins said. "He wrote Climates of Hunger back in the 1970s looking at how climate changes over the last several thousand years have affected human activity and human cultures."

This, he suggests, is traceable to Bryson's high-school interest in archaeology, followed by college degrees in geology, then meteorology, and studies in oceanography, limnology, and other disciplines. "He's looked at the interconnections of all these things and their impact on human societies," Hopkins says. "He's one of those people I would say is a Renaissance person."

The Renaissance, of course, produced its share of heretics, and 21 years after he supposedly retired, one could ponder whether Bryson's work today is a tale of continuing heresy, or of conventional wisdom being outpaced by an octogenarian.

Without addressing-or being asked-that question, UW Green Bay Emeritus Professor Joseph Moran agrees that Bryson qualifies as "the father of the science of modern climatology."

"In his lifetime, in his career, he has shaped the future as well as the present state of climatology," Moran says, adding, "We're going to see his legacy with us for many generations to come."

Holding bachelor's and master's degrees from Boston College, Moran became a doctoral candidate under Bryson in the late 1960s and early '70s. "I came to Wisconsin because he was there," Moran told us.

With Hopkins, Moran co-authored Wisconsin's Weather and Climate, a book aimed at teachers, students, outdoor enthusiasts, and workers with a need to understand what the weather does and why. Bryson wrote a preface for the book but Hopkins told us the editors "couldn't fathom" certain comments, thinking he was being too flippant with the remark that "Wisconsin is not for wimps when it comes to weather."

Clearly what those editors couldn't fathom was that Bryson simply enjoys mulling over the reasons weather and climate behave as they do and what might make them-and consequently us-behave differently. This was immediately obvious when we asked him why, at his age, he keeps showing up for work at a job he's no longer paid to do.

"It's fun!" he said. Ed Hopkins and Joe Moran would undoubtedly agree.

"I think that's one of the reasons for his longevity," Moran says. "He's so interested and inquisitive. I regard him as a pot-stirrer. Sometimes people don't react well when you challenge their long-held ideas, but that's how real science takes place."-Dave Hoopman
